The Future of Energy, Decentralization, and FERC Order 2222

Most Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) have been difficult to scale up. In 2020, however, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) issued Order 2222, which removed barriers to adding DERs to the electric grid. Our distinguished panel discussed what these changes mean for the future of the American energy market. Panelists included:

• Kara Allen, Senior Advisor to U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (RI);

• Chris Rauscher, Senior Director of Market Development & Policy at Sunrun; and,

• Nikita Singhal, Senior Engineer Scientist at the Electric Power Research Institute

2019 Event Highlights

YPE & Climatelink on cleantech financing

On June 10th, the Young Professionals in Energy in conjunction with Climate Link hosted an evening of networking and a panel discussion centered around the how, why, and when of cleantech financing.

The event was hosted in San Francisco’s Financial District and was a great success, attracting cleantech entrepreneurs, investors, lawyers, and sustainability experts. Over the course of the evening, we heard from Dan Baldi (Silicon Valley Bank Energy & Resource Innovation Practice), Christina Borsum (New Energy Nexus), Danny Cotter (The Westly Group) and Julia Murphy (JMM Sustainable Finance). The conversation centered around the perils of “cleantech” nomenclature, different fundraising options for cleantech startups, the cleantech investor mindset, and what metrics to hit when seeking investment.

YPE Leadership Team members Kezia Wright and Sherrie Totoki were instrumental in piecing together this panel. Sherrie Totoki is currently the Manager of Operations at Elemental Accelerator, a clean-tech accelerator program that is funded by a diverse coalition of utility partners, corporate partners, the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Department of Energy, state government, and philanthropic organizations. Kezia Wright is a venture investor and is part of the founding team of Amaranthine, a venture capital investment firm that is connected to the Web Summit’s global technology network. Ravi Mikkelsen, founder of Climate Link - a digital network of cleantech investors and entrepreneurs, co-hosted the event.
