Bioenergy Recovery Facility Site Visit at EBMUD

Join us for an in person tour of the EBMUD's Bioenergy Recovery Site and networking happy hour at Temescal Brewing to follow!

YPE is pleased to partner with EBMUD to host this site visit tour of renewable energy infrastructure right here in the Bay Area! This will be the first of a series of site visits YPE will offer in 2024, look for similar events in the near future!

The East Bay Municipal Utility District is a California public utility that supplies high-quality drinking water, generates renewable energy, and provides pollution prevention and wastewater treatment services that protect San Francisco Bay. EBMUD has been producing renewable energy since the 1980s; in 2011 it became the first wastewater treatment plant in North America to produce more energy onsite than is needed to run the facility. EBMUD collects 20-40 tons of food scraps daily from restaurants, supermarkets and other municipal entities and utilizes anaerobic digestion to create biogas that powers its on-site low emission gas turbine to power its facility, selling any excess energy back to the grid.

The EBMUD in-person tour will be led by an EBMUD employee and typically lasts 1.5 hours. Please note - all attendees will be required to fill out a waiver in order to participate in the tour. Please fill out the waiver and fill out this survey so we can collect copies in advance. Alternatively, you can also print and bring your waiver with you to your tour. Additionally, EBMUD cautions - "This tour involves walking up and down narrow stairways, walking over uneven ground, and potentially being exposed to strong odors and birds." Closed toed shoes are required and parking is limited, so please carpool if at all possible

Directions to the facility can be found here or refer to the description below: "When you turn onto Wake Avenue, follow the road as it curves to the right. The Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) is approximately 1/4 mile, at the end of Wake. The security guard will provide parking directions. Look for signs that will direct you to the building entrance and to the reception.

Happy Hour and Networking will follow around 5:30 PM at Temescal Brewing - 4115 Telegraph Ave, Oakland, CA 94609. YPE to provide an initial round of drinks for those who can attend!

Virtual Power Plants (VPPs): the path to distributed decarbonization

Are virtual power plants (VPPs) the solution to achieving our decarbonization goals? VPPs are innovative energy systems that leverage technology and advanced control systems to manage and optimize a diverse array of distributed energy resources (DERs). VPPs represent a fundamental shift in energy management, transitioning from a centralized model to a decentralized and distributed system that can enhance grid reliability and promoting the integration of renewable energy. So is an even more distributed electric grid the way of the future? Come learn from leaders in the VPP ecosystem to understand the challenges and opportunities in deploying VPPs at scale!

Speakers:

  • Yang Yu - Senior Manager, Business Development & Market Strategy, Sunrun (Moderator)

  • Astrid Atkinson - Co-Founder & CEO, Camus Energy

Bringing Offshore Wind to California: A Conversation With CA's CEC and CPUC

Young Professionals in Energy (YPE) SF Bay Area is hosting two energy policymakers for a conversation about the pathways and challenges to development of offshore wind energy in California.

Senate Bill 100 set a 2045 goal of powering all retail electricity sold in California and state agency electricity needs with renewable and zero-carbon resources. It requires the state to use programs under existing laws to achieve 100% zero-carbon electricity.

California Energy Commission (CEC) Chair David Hochschild joins California Public Utilities Comission (CPUC) Comissioner John Reynolds for a panel discussion on offshore wind development goals, permitting, grid integration, finance, legal consideration, and more. The discussion will be moderated by Jeff St. John from Canary Media and time will be allocated for audience Q&A.

This event is hosted and sponsored by East Bay Community Energy (EBCE) in Oakland, California.

After the event, stick around for a social hour with food and drink to connect with our panelists, participants, YPE, and EBCE.

Energy Hot Topics in the Park!

Are you tired of virtual one-sided panels? Do you want to discuss contested energy topics? Then this YPE SF Bay Area event is for you! No wrong answers- just ideas, opinions, and friendship in the park.

This event is free, but please register for planning purposes. BYO favorite drinks and snacks!

We will have three rounds of discussion, the first beginning at 1:30pm. At the beginning of each round, 3 energy discussion prompts will be read out loud. Participants will select the prompt that is most interesting to them to discuss. We will break out into 3 small groups and discuss the prompt for 20 minutes. We will then take a small break and switch to the next round .

After the three rounds of discussions are over, stick around to socialize with other attendees!

Curious what we'll discuss? Here are some example prompts:

  • Should the US increase its use of nuclear?

  • Should we invest in green hydrogen? If yes, in what sectors?

  • Who do you think is in a better position to move climate policy forward? State or federal government?

  • Should natural gas be used as a transition fuel to achieve net zero carbon?

  • Which is more beneficial to clean energy investment - venture capital vs government funding?

  • Should the US pay developing countries to help them avoid carbon emissions? If yes, how do you decide how much money and how should we pay them?

  • Do you think autonomous electric vehicles present more positives or negatives to the workforce, transit access, safety, and the environment?

  • Should individuals cut down on flight travel in order to reduce their carbon footprint?

  • Should the federal government actively build new clean infrastructure or should we incentivize markets to move in that direction?

YPE SF, LIS, BlackOak & CELI present: round table on DEI in clean energy

(Virtual) Roundtable discussion with diverse clean energy leaders: perspectives on DEI from YPE SF Bay Area, LatinXs in Sustainability, BlackOak Collective, and Clean Energy Leadership Institute

As people of color working in clean energy – a predominantly white and male space - we spend a lot of time thinking about diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the workspace and beyond. Realizing that important industry discussions around DEI have historically centered white voices, which do not fully encapsulate the intricacies of lived POC experiences, we invite you to join us – diverse leaders from Young Professionals in Energy SF Bay Area, LatinXs in Sustainability, BlackOak Collective, and Clean Energy Leadership Institute - in a first-ever joint virtual discussion. We will dive into important topics such as: what opportunities exist for POC and under-represented groups in clean energy? What are the barriers to entry for these groups? How can we create a more inclusive and accessible clean energy industry? How can employers, industry groups, and allies make a difference?

This event is an opportunity to hear from four nonprofits working to diversify the talent pool in clean energy and sustainability by lowering barriers to entry and encouraging meaningful connections and opportunities for professional growth. Learn about our various initiatives ranging from scholarship and mentorship programs to career panels, community outreach, and more. We invite folks of all backgrounds - POC and underrepresented identities, allies, industry groups, employers, etc. - to join us in this discussion and be inspired to take action.
